Spa is one of the strangest Grand Prix of the season, the weather can change in an instant and we saw that yesterday in qualifying. It looked for all the world that Paul Di Resta would be on pole when the rain began to pour down in Q3, the rain then eased of with a minute to go and he found himself down in 5th.
- The rack is one of the fastest of the year with a top speed of 320kph and the drivers being on full throttle 70% of the time.
- Since 1999 this Ferrari and McLaren have won all the races apart from Vettels’ 2011 win in his Red Bull.
- Five of the last 11 race winners have been on Pole.
I think the above helps Lewis Hamilton, as usual it a lot will come down to the first lap, if he can keep the Red Bulls behind throughout the that lap I expect him to pull away as he clearly has the fastest F1 car at the moment. The next aspect is his tyres, Mercedes’ tyre problems were well documented however they look to have well and truly put these behind them after the performance in Hungry. The final factor to consider is the weather, you need to be on the right tyre at the right time round here and the only real way to legislate for that is with keeping stakes small.
If Hamilton can get a good start and Mercedes can keep him on the right tyre at the right time then I expect him to win. I have him at nearer the 2.75 mark for this so will be taking the 3.85 on offer.
