STANDING OVATION looks to be ahead of the handicapper for the time being. Having won his last four races a fiver timer is on the card sin this. I was really taken by the way he beat some really useful horses at Wincanton last week and a repeat of that performance should be enough to see the Pipe yard take this race for the third year running.

THOMAS CRAPPER won over course and distance last time out despite not having the most fluent round of jumping. At the prices on offer I think it’s worth taking an each-way gamble as I would have priced him up at nearer 16/1. The hope being that the last run will have sharpened him up and he has improved over the summer. From previous form he is a horse who starts the season in good form but then tails off in the spring.

CHICAGO GREY is a horse I rate very highly. He stays all day and if he takes to these obstacles then he’d the one to beat in this. The smaller field should help him as he has a tendency to get hampered by fallers due to his ‘run from the back’ style. Balthazar King is the obvious danger after two impressive wins already this year but doesn’t interest me at that price. Uncle Junior has been below par since winning this race last year. Any Currency is another horse that I like but I think has too much to do at the weights. The biggest danger to me looks to be Diamond Harry, this horse won the Hennessey Gold Cup a few years ago and was ┬áseen as a serious contender in races like the Betfair Chase and the Gold Cup, however he never kicked on from that Hennessey win. If a change of scenery off a lower weight can liven him up then he’ll go close here, however that’s a few too many ‘ifs’ to back him here.
