Australian Open WTA Day 7

Na Li was pushed hard in her last match by Safrova losing the first set 6-1 and then having to win a second set tie break to avoid going out. Makarova has made the quarter-finals in the last two years and had a relatively simple 6-4 6-4  victory in the last round. This looks like it should be a close game and with Na Li not looking as strong as she has in previous year Makarova is the one to side with. She does have a 0-4 record against Na Li, so the better bet is probably taking her with a plus handicap. She could lose 6-4 6-4 and it would still be covered.

[symple_heading type=”h2″ title=”Casey Dellacqua v Eugenie Bouchard” margin_top=”20px;” margin_bottom=”20px” text_align=”left”]

Casey Dellacqua is having a decent week with three wins in straight sets but Eugenie Bouchard will be the best player she’s faced. The Canadian teenager is improving year on year and was really impressive in her 6-2 6-2 victory over Lauren Davies. A repeat of that performance should be enough to cover a 3.5 game handicap even with the home crowd against her.

[symple_heading type=”h2″ title=”Angelique Kerber v Flavia Pennetta” margin_top=”20px;” margin_bottom=”20px” text_align=”left”]

Flavia Pennetta showed at the US Open, where she reached the semi finals, that she has battling qualities and a touch of class. She seems to have carried that on here with three straight sets victories. I was impressed with her 6-0 6-2 result against Cadantu in the first round. I think she is being underrated in this. Kerber hasn’t really kicked on from the excellent 2012 season she had and looks to be too short here.
