Epsom Derby Day

Cirrus Des Aigles is a favourite horse of mine and he hasn’t done much wrong this year. A 2nd on Dubai World Cup night in the Sheema Classic was followed up by two wins. In those two victories he beat last years Arc winner Treve and Olympic Glory. On form there’s nothing wrong with him and and I won’t be surprised to see him win today. However I’m taking him on with FLINTSHIRE, any rain would be a concern for the Andre Fabre horse… but with a dry day yesterday and a dry night we should be on the fast side of good this morning, therefore the hope is that any rain will take us back to good.

Flintshire has shown a high level of form on good, winning all three of his starts on good ground. He was excellent in the Grand Prix De Paris, which started him on his Arc trail. However come Arc day the ground was soft and he wasn’t able to show his best. I don’t think there is too much between the French horses on ability, so the ground could be the deciding factor here. At the prices I’m siding with the four year old and hoping that there isn’t too much rain about.

In my opinion people are looking too hard at this race. For me there are simple questions and if they can be answered all by one horse then that should go a long way to finding the winner. The question that I’ve asked are;

Who has the best breeding?

Galileo won The Derby and Ouija Board won The Oaks… they are the parents of Australia.

What is the best form in the race?

The 2000 Guineas is the best form in this race. The 2nd, Kingman, came out and won the Irish 2000 Guineas with the 4th from Newmarket, Shifting Power, finishing runner up at The Curragh. The Grey Gatsby finished 10th at Newmarket and has since won The Dante and The French Derby.

Australia finished 3rd in the 2000 Guineas and that looks to be the best form in the race.

Who is the ‘best’ trainer?

Aiden O’Brien has won this race four time this century, Australia is trained by Aiden O’Brien.

Who is the ‘best’ jockey?

I don’t think that Joseph O’Brien is the best, however he’s already won a Derby so he knows how to ride Epsom (in theory)

AUSTRALIA ticks the most boxes and that is where my money is going.
