A lot of the  pre-race talk regarding this race will be about Encke. The 2012 St. Leger winner is having his first start since completing a drugs ban. If he runs up to that form again then he’ll win this, however the trainer ha stated that he doesn’t want the ground too firm for him. That has to be a worry, whether or not the near two-year break has had a negative affect on him.

PETHER’S MOON brings a good level of ‘franked’ form with runs behind Telescope and Cavalryman. He also has course and distance form and the beating of Songcraft on a line through Excellent Result. Quest For Peace won this race two years ago, before going over to Australia and failing, he was unable to place in any of his eight races. For me he has more question marks over him than Encke.

Pether’s Moon would appear to have the least question marks, so deserves to be favourite. The 2.63  (13/8) available is just big enough to tempt me.

This race looks the perfect opportunity for SHIFTING POWER to get a win under his belt. He finished 4th in the English 2000 Guineas, before finishing 2nd in the Irish version. He went over to France last time out and finished 2nd in another Group One. This is a step down in grade, to a Group Three, even though there are some useful horses. Lightning Thunder finished 2nd in both the English and Irish 1000 Guineas. She did however disappoint when 9th in The Coronation Stakes at Ascot last time out. If Shifting Power turns up in the same for he’s shown this season then I expect him to win this race well, he has the best form in the book and only needs to hold it to win.

A very competitive five furlong sprint, which could be won by any number of these. My preference however is for TAKE COVER, he had G-Force, Reroute, Kingsgate Native and Monsieur Joe in behind last time out. All the vibes about this horse are that he’s potentially a Group One animal. For him to achieve that they’ll need to get him to settle better, he’s drawn next to the front running Hamza today so that should help his cause. He looks to be improving all the time this season and another step forward could see him take this very comfortably.
