Hillstar isn’t a horse I like as I’ve mentioned a number of times this year and I have to oppose him again today. Twelve furlongs is his best trip, so for a start I don’t think he’ll be able to reproduce his ‘form’ he’s shown this season over this ten furlong trip. I’m going to take him on with VANCOUVERITE. The Godolphin four-year-old is a proper ten furlong horse who has won Group Two races and was placed in a Group One behind Vercingetorix at Meydan earlier this year. On his first start after a break and on his UK debut he ran a credible 2nd in The Doom Bar Stakes at Newbury, he went down a short head that day and I expect him to come on massively for that run. The lack of Jamie Spencer is also a positive for me.
True Story was thought of as a Derby horse when he won the Feilden Stakes easily by seven lengths, he followed that with a third placed finish, when odds-on, behind The Grey Gatsby. That didn’t look great form at first, but The Grey Gatsby has gone on to win a Group One in France. Subsequent runs in The Derby and The Eclipse haven’t really shown me much. On paper The Eclipse form is strong, but that was an odd race which I don’t want to take the form too seriously, I wouldn’t be interested in backing Trading Leather, Somewhat or even Kingston Hill to win this race.
Vancouverite has had less racing than most of his rivals in this season, so should be open to some improvement especially after his last run.
