The Hannon and Hughes team have nominated Ivawood as their banker of the meeting, has has obvious claims on him third placed finishes in both the English and Irish Guineas, along with two wins at group two level and a nose second in a group one last year.

The English 2000 Guineas looks to be the key form race here and it’s the fourth home, BOSSY GUEST, that interests me the most. He finished fourth, within half a length of Ivawood despite being hampered in his run. They were running off level weights that day, but he receives 5lbs this time around due to Ivawood’s penalty for his group two wins.

Ivawood is a classy horse, who is likely a cut above most of these in this race, however 2.62 (13/8) v 10.0 (9/1) is just wrong.

I was looking forward to seeing Laxfield Road run in this race, but she now heads to The Albany Stakes, so it’s one of Wesley Wards other runners that I want to side with. ACAPULCO was purchased for $750,000 back in March, by the Coolmore lot. She disappointed on debut, which the trainer put down to her not handling the track. I’m not a massive believer in what owners and trainers say, but if the below quotes are true then this horse will be hammered in the betting and go off a lot shorter price, think Hootenanny last year.

“By far and away the best work I ever had of any horse I ever trained on the grass,” Ward said. “It was a sight to see. A couple of Coolmore boys were out to watch the work themselves. It was a phenomenal work.

“Since then, all her works have been lights out. If she runs anything like she’s breezed there’s no way anything I ever had would beat her.”

She has the added bonus of being drawn in stall twenty of twenty-three, with her being the pace in the race and the quicker ground likely to be nearer the stands side she could be very tough to peg back.

INTEGRAL is a cut above these, she’s a dual group one winner and has mixed it with the colts in The Lockinge last time out. She finished fourth that day, with the third and fifth home both winning since. She beat Rizeena by two lengths last year conceding 8lbs, so she’s better off at the weights today only having to give away 5lbs. Euro Charline finished behind Rizeena in last years Coronation Stakes. She did win a group one on her next start but that was over nine and a half furlongs, the drop back in trip shouldn’t be an issue, but I just don’t think she’s good enough other a mile when compared to Integral.

Integral won this race last year and it’s hard to come up with a reason why she won’t do so again this year, I have her priced at a maximum 1.80 (4/5), so any odds-against has to go into the ‘value’ category.

THE GREY GATSBY holds the best for in this race with his Irish Champion Stakes win last year. His re-appearance this season was at Meydan where he finished second to Solow, which now doesn’t look to be that bad of a performance. He disappointed at The Curragh last time out, but Al Kazeem and Postponed are both Group One horses.

There is a lot of hype around Free Eagle, however he hasn’t done much on the racetrack yet. His one piece of form is when he finished third in The Champion Stakes at Ascot last year. That race was won by Noble Mission with Al Kazeem in second. That race puts him near enough levels with The Grey Gatsby, on a line through Al Kazeem. However this is Free Eagles’ seasonal debut, he’s had a ‘headcold’, I can’t be backing him for this race at 4.00 (3/1).

The Grey Gatsby is a proven Group One performer and he has to go down as the ‘value’ call in the race. He will have his quick ground and he’ll have a strong pace to aim at, so the only excuse will be that he’s not good enough.
