Newbury – 14th May 2016

I’m not sure how anyone can be keen on backing Eagle Top at odds-on in this race. He has top class back form, and this is a drop in grade however he ran two shockers at the end of last season. One of those was when he was odds-on in a Group Three at Newbury and the other was in The Arc. He was also beaten on his seasonal re-appearance last year, with limited excuses being offered.

My preference in this race is for the lightly raced filly, CARNACHY. She’s a course an distance winner who has already had the benefit of a run this season. She won a listed event at Goodwood from the well fancied Bateel last month and that’s a horse who I believe will be winning group races this season.

Star Storm is another progressive type, however he has to carry a penalty in this, which may be too much for him. Ayrad looks fully exposed and I think it’s unlikely there’s much improvement to be had with him, despite moving yards. Astronereus still hasn’t shown anything more than handicapper form in my opinion, therefore he doesn’t interest me today.

An interesting Lockinge this year, with no stand out contender and the softer going denting the chances of some that would have ran well in this. Limato looked a Group One sprinter in 2014 and still showed that pace in 2015. He was stepped up to seven furlongs towards the end of last year, winning a Group Two and finishing second in a Group One on Arc day. The step up to a mile doesn’t look to be an issue, however he needs quick ground to be seen at his best and therefore he’s one to avoid today. Arod has classy back from over a mile, and has one of the best two peices of form in the field, when he narrowly failed to hold of Solow at Goodwood along with finishing third in this race last year. He’s another that needs quick ground to be seen at his best, so for that reason I’m avoiding him today.

TOORMORE finished second in this race last year and went on a bit of a globe trotting tour in the second half of last season, collecting some valuable prize money. He won on his season reappearance at Sandown this year, where he had to concede 3lbs to the field. That day he had Barchan, Gabrial, Belardo and Dutch Connection behind him that day and now re-opposes on better terms. He has the best form in the race, no concerns about the ground.
