Glorious Goodwood | Day 1

No matter what they call this festival, I will always know it as Glorious Goodwood. A week of linen, Pimms’, strawberries and cream. Oh and some fantastic racing to bet on.

This is one of my favourite races, in the past we’ve had winners such as Galileo Gold, Highland Reel and Olympic Glory. Today’s renewal sees the Group Two Superlative Stakes one-two face off again here. Boynton out-battled WAR DECREE that day to win by ¾ of a length, however the Aidan O’Brien charge receives 3lbs today and I fully expect him to turn the tables.

Thunder Snow finished sixth in The Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, however he was a long way behind the winner and was 3 ½ lengths behind the fifth placed finisher. There are some arguments that he wasn’t drawn on the correct side of the track and the ground wasn’t right for him, which are both valid excuses, but at the moment I don’t see him at the same level as the front two in the market.

With the way that War Decree was backed in by ‘The Lads’ at Newmarket, I think we can safely assume they think a lot of this horse and I think he’s worth another chance today.

I don’t by into the Home Of The Brave hype, he won a weak Group Three last time out and has never placed above that level. For my money this race is all about DUTCH CONNECTION, he’s a previous course and distance winner and he finished second in this race last term. Last time out he finished second in the Ascot Summer Mile, but was almost four lengths ahead of Convey. On a line through that for he has the beating Home Of The Brave, despite him dropping back to seven furlongs. The selection stays a mile, but has a solid turn of foot.

On form Dutch Connection has finished a length behind Gleneagles in a Group One, he’s won a Group Three at Royal Ascot which was then followed up by a half-length defeat to Territories in another Group One. He began this season by finishing a neck second to Toormore in a Group Two. Home Of The Brave hasn’t shown form anywhere near that, in my opinion.
